Dance of Death: The Knight

A knight stands amid the bodies of other fallen men, attempting to fight off death. After having survived many combats, the knight is at last vanquished by death, the opponent which cannot be beaten.

In this illustration, the knight tries to strike back at death with his sword even while his other hand seizes the Grim Reaper's lance, which has fatally pierced him.

There is a book and what is likely an hourglass on he ground. The hourglass is a memento mori, reminding us of how fleeting time is.
